  • Compounding/Compound

To prepare components into a drug product, including the preparing of drugs or devices in anticipation of receiving prescriptions based on routine, regularly observed prescribing patterns. Compounding is considered pharmacy practice and it includes mixing a drug when a required dosage is not available commercially or removing a non-essential ingredient from a drug to which a client is allergic. Compounding is not within the scope of nursing practice. Crushing medications, reconstituting medications for parenteral administration or mixing two different types of insulin are not considered compounding.
