Code of Conduct

Effective June 1, 2026, the CNNB adopted the Code of Conduct for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners (the “Code of Conduct”) applicable to all RN/NPs in New Brunswick. The Code of Conduct is enforceable under provincial legislation and replaces the Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses (2019).

The Code of Conduct describes the behavior and conduct that RNs/NPs are required to uphold when practicing in New Brunswick or providing nursing services to clients in the province. It is intended to inform RNs/NPs and the public of the foundational nursing values and principles that guide nursing practice, and the accountabilities that all RNs/NPs have to clients, employers, colleagues and the public.

Accountability of RNs and NPs

All RNs/NPs are responsible for understanding the principles of the Code of Conduct and are accountable to applying them to their nursing practice, regardless of their practice setting, role, title, responsibility, or domain of practice.

The Code of Conduct:

  • supports safe, competent, compassionate and ethical nursing practice;
  • supports public trust and confidence in the profession; and
  • provides the basis for complaints, investigations, and disciplinary decisions.

RNs/NPs are expected to use the Code of Conduct along with relevant federal and/or provincial legislation, the CNNB Standards of Practice and additional documents, and organizational requirements to guide their nursing practice.

Regulatory Authority

Failure to practice in accordance with the Code of Conduct may be considered professional misconduct and lead to disciplinary investigation or action.
