March 9, 2026   ▪   External Partner Information

These resources are designed for medical professionals in New Brunswick who are authorized to conduct capacity assessments, support or contribute to capacity assessments, and complete documentation required under the Supported Decision-Making and Representation Act (SDMRA).

Capacity Assessment Guidelines

The guidelines set out the required and recommended principles and practices for conducting accurate capacity assessments under the SDMRA. The guidelines cover general assessment requirements, specific guidance for determining if a person meets the test for capacity with or without assistance, and guidance for determining whether a person can make decisions through a supported decision-making process should they not satisfy the test for capacity for some of all of the decisions that they need to make.

Capacity Assessor Companion Course

This course provides attentional learning opportunities for capacity assessors and expands on information provided in the Capacity Assessment Guidelines. The course is designed to deepen understanding of some of the important concepts found in the SDMRA including human rights considerations, dignity of risk, capacity with assistance, supported decision-making, and the least intrusive measure principle.
